Department of Philosophy

"The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet."- Aristotle.

About

When Polba Mahavidyalaya was founded in 2005, the Department of Philosophy was formed. At the beginning, Philosophy was inducted as a program course and an Honours course was introduced subsequently in 2009. Currently, the department has three faculties– one Associate Professor, one Assistant Professor, and one State Aided College Teacher to fulfill the student's academic interests.

Since the college is affiliated with The University of Burdwan, the Department follows and implements the syllabus that the university has prescribed for its undergraduate colleges. The department understands the distinctive sort of problems that the students of this region face regularly, and, therefore, has taken considerable care and a sympathetic approach towards the students and their problems.

The study of philosophy enhances our ability to evaluate and resolve problems. It helps analyze concepts, definitions, arguments, and problems. It strengthens our capacity to formulate ideas, deal with various issues relating to the sense of values, and extract what is essential from masses of information. Philosophy means love of wisdom. It is the study of knowledge and ‘thinking about thinking’. It teaches critical thinking and logical analysis which helps us to understand the world. The students who study philosophy as a subject can learn how to live with a critical eye.

Philosophy is eternally important in all spheres of life. It teaches ethical values, helps us to know the psychological state of the human mind, and teaches us to live, understand, and develop society. India has a rich cultural legacy and heritage, which is based on a philosophy highly esteemed throughout the world. Thus Philosophy cannot be eliminated from human life and will always remain important to make a better human being.
