Department of English

Crafting Worlds through the Art of Language.

About

Since the inception of Polba Mahavidyalaya, the department of English has been working tirelessly to bring this perfection to life, understanding that education is the expression of perfection already present in man. The Department has had the General Course since 2005 and Honours Course since 2007. The department is fully aware of how important it is for students to be proficient in English because it is the language of the global marketplace. The future architects of the society need to feel competent in the core areas of learning a foreign language like English. The fundamental skills of reading, writing, and speaking English correctly should be imparted to them. Even though English literature is our main focus, we have made language an integral part of our curriculum.

The department instills in the pupils the fundamentals of literature while adhering to the set syllabus. Through literature, which acts as a mirror reflecting a rainbow of emotions, students gain first-hand knowledge of human psychology. This aids them in going forward. It is crucial that children learn how to be self-analytical from the start in this complex environment where the digital market has taken over the globe and turned people into zombie think tanks. The central idea of "the journey within," the centripetal component of life, will only heighten literary students' awareness of how the universe functions. The English department views literature and language as complementary disciplines that bridge the other.

Under the current Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), students have access to a broad selection of English literature. The fundamental goal of CBCS is to encourage students to examine topics outside the purview of textbooks in addition to restricting their comprehension to literary materials. According to this perspective, subjects like feminist theory, gender studies, and world literature are included in CBCS in our field. The necessity of communication skills is another crucial aspect of our CBCS. In addition to learning how to appreciate literary texts, students also need to gain some orientation on how to apply communication skills.

In addition to these exclusive academic activities, the department is very interested in fostering students' humanistic and cultural aspects. Students are encouraged by the department to take part in various social work-related and intra-college cultural programs. Another area in which we want our pupils to be actively involved is sports. This should be the mindset: a healthy body in a healthy mind. All things considered, we support the complete development of our students and make every effort to do so.

Additionally, the department encourages discipline as a norm. Regular parent-teacher conferences also assist us in monitoring non-routine students. Tests and assignments are two efficient methods we use to monitor our pupils' academic progress.

Under our tutorial approach, a departmental teacher oversees each group that each student is placed in. We can also assist students when they encounter any challenges, whether they can be academic or not, thanks to the mentor-mentee program.
